The South Skunk Blues Society's Home Page

Welcome to our home on the web. The South Skunk Blues Society is made up of blues music fans and musicians located in east central Iowa, near the South Skunk River in the Newton, Baxter, Kellogg and Grinnell areas.

The South Skunk Blues Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving and cultivating Blues music. The Society promotes public performance opportunities for Blues artists, and seeks to increase the exposure to and appreciation of Blues music by the general public.

News and Info

Peter Wilson has written a great article about the Blues scene in Iowa. It is the current cover story for The Iowan magazine entitled "Indigo Rhythms - Iowa Blues Color The Heartland." The story details Iowa's surprising blues music scene and how this blackest of genres has established itself in one of the whitest states in the country. Iowa's many blues societies are one of the key reasons this scene is possible.

MEET OUR NEW PRESIDENT

Come meet our newly elected President, Eric Leedom, at our next General Membership meeting on March 7th at 3pm. As always, meetings are held at the VFW, 315 1st Ave. W, Newton, IA. and the public is encouraged to attend! Let's help Eric lead SSBS into the new decade.
Planning for the 18th Bowlful of Blues, scheduled for the summer of 2010, will now begin in earnest. Deciding on the line-up will be one of the first orders of business. Gathering volunteers and sponsors will soon follow.
The continued success of the South Skunk Blues Society depends upon getting more people actively involved in the planning, organizing and execution of our public events. We need people with fundraising, internet, graphic design and marketing skills to spread the word about SSBS in all mediums available.
We have been bringing quality blues talent into the Jasper/Poweshiek county area since 1993 and would like to continue doing so. Our Bowlful of Blues is the second longest running blues society sponsored festival in Iowa and has gained a reputation among musicians as one of the most pleasant festival experiences they encounter. Please don't let it disappear due to lack of interest on the organizational side. It's fun to go to the concerts every year, but remember, the show doesn't go on all on it's own. It needs committed, caring people with a love for the blues to keep the lifeblood flowing. Come to the meeting and join in, SSBS needs you!
